HSSE Launches..... and hits the ground running

Thank you for joining us for the first edition of the HSSE Newsletter.

This is our first newsletter at the end of our first term. Seventeen local people have enrolled in the School, all bringing their ideas and enthusiasm to what has been an inspiring first few weeks.

See Ann’s Story below and check out other student profiles at the Hampshire School for Social Entrepreneurs website.

Highlights to date have been witness sessions from Erica Sosna, from The Life Project (see below), and Tim Houghton, Executive Director of Groundwork Solent, an environmental charity supporting local communities in need.

Expert sessions included Networking with Liz Donegan, Head of Project Development for Community Action Hampshire. (CAH)

This culminated in a gruelling speed networking round, offering students the opportunity to try out their newly formed elevator pitch. See the video below.

Cris Jezard, CAH’s Social Enterprise expert, led a thought provoking workshop on considering vision, mission and social objectives.

Students this term also got to have their first meeting with their personal tutors and discovered the wonders of Action Learning Sets with Mollie Treverton.

Overall, it’s been a brilliant first term –but don’t just take it from me, come hear for yourself and join the students for minced pies and mulled wine on Monday, 14 December - more details here.

Speed Networking - Watch the video

The students were asked to come up with an elevator pitch - or a short and pithy summary that captured the essence of their big idea. There then followed a lively session of speed networking – see the video above.

Hey Big Spender - 'Getting a grip' on costly spending habits.......

Student Profile - Ann Carver

Time invested in 'Hey Big Spender' will be time well spent. The vision is to develop a programme for the addicted shopper to enjoy spending less and having more - more money and more happiness.

Simply designed, fun and effective common sense strategies, to integrate into people’s everyday spending, will help to solve the all time high debt mountain.

'Everyone knows someone in debt'

My name is Ann Carver and first and foremost I am truly thankful for this excellent opportunity I have been granted as a ‘social entrepreneur’.

The course is now well underway.  I have a clear vision and plan and have learnt some excellent strategies to suit my creative way of learning.

Talent, passion and purpose are some key ingredients to becoming an excellent servant for others.  Together, lets get wrapped up in moving forward instead of being wrapped up in ourselves.

To give myself to a worthy purpose I know will be rewarding beyond what I can imagine at this moment in time.

For now, I will keep the faith in what I cannot yet see and press on towards the ‘Hey Big Spender’ vision.

First Day Nerves

At the end of the first day, four students agreed to tell us about their aspirations for the coming year. We’re planning to document the progress of these students and produce a DVD at the end of the year to promote the School and inspire future students to enrol.

Watch Ann, Steve, Karen and Kayembe below.

Erica Sosna - Expert Witness

Erica Sosna founded The Life Project in 2006 with the aim to create an alive and evolving consultancy that provided accessible, effective education in life skills and self-management.

Erica believes in personal development education and emotional literacy as a prerequisite to any formal education. When a person understands who they are and how they work, can connect with others and communicate effectively, their choices and opportunities expand.
